Membership and your account
What is a credit union?+
A credit union is a financial co-operative owned by its members. Unlike traditional banks, we do not have outside shareholders, so our focus is on fair, ethical financial services that put people first.
Who can join Cheshire Community Bank?+
Membership is open to people who live or work in Cheshire or Flintshire.
What are the benefits of joining?+
Members can access safe and secure savings, fair and affordable loans, online account access, friendly local support and services designed to support long-term financial wellbeing.
What do I need to join?+
We need proof of your identity and address. We can often verify this electronically without affecting your credit file. If that is not possible, we may ask for documents such as a valid passport or driving licence and a recent utility bill, bank statement, council tax letter or tenancy agreement.
Will my details be kept confidential?+
Yes. Personal information is kept secure and treated as strictly confidential in line with UK data protection laws, including UK GDPR.
Loans and repayments
How do I apply for a loan?+
New members can apply online using our loan application form. Existing members can apply for a new loan or request an eligible top-up through their online account.
How do you assess my loan?+
We consider each application individually and look carefully at affordability, your circumstances and whether repayments will be manageable for your budget.
Can I apply with poor or limited credit history?+
Yes. Everyone’s circumstances are different, and we assess applications individually rather than relying only on a credit score.
How long does a loan decision take?+
Most decisions are made within three working days. During busy periods or for more complex applications, it may take up to seven working days.
Can I repay my loan early?+
Yes. You can make additional payments or repay your loan in full at any time without early repayment fees or penalties.
What should I do if I am struggling with repayments?+
Please contact us as soon as possible. Our team will listen to your situation and work with you to explore a suitable and affordable way forward.
Savings and security
How do I withdraw my savings?+
You can usually request a withdrawal online or in branch. Funds are paid into a bank account in your name. Savings secured against a loan may not be available to withdraw.
Can I open a Junior Saver Account?+
Yes. Our Junior Saver Account is available for children and young people up to age 18 and can be opened by an adult member on behalf of a child.
What happens when a Junior Saver turns 18?+
The Junior Saver Account will automatically transfer to an adult account when the account holder turns 18.
Are credit unions safe?+
Yes. Eligible savings are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, subject to its eligibility criteria and limits.
Are there any hidden costs?+
No. We believe in transparent lending. Interest, repayments and applicable terms are explained clearly before you agree to a product.
